With the growing international involvement of the National team and soccer clubs from Liechtenstein an international infrastructure and enhanced requirements became necessary. The FIFA as well as the UEFA required Liechtenstein in the mid 90s to provide modern facilities and a stadium that fulfilled the international standards to recognize Liechtenstein as a football location.
On July 31st 1998 the Rheinpark Stadium with its official international designations was opened with a friendly game of the FC Vaduz against the then incumbent German Champian 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
Eight years later, in 2006 the Stadium was enlarged with two new, roofed stands in the south and north. The training facilities were over-all modernised and increased, with a artificial turf pitch and two natural pitches. Also integrated within the facilities were a Beach Volleyball pitch and a playground.
