Initial deliverances of a foundation of a Football Club in Vaduz reach back to early 1931. Several protocols from the municipal council prove that there was a faction in Vaduz, interested in establishing a soccer club with an assigned area within the community. On October 23rd 1931 the decision on building a soccer field in the Rheinauen was failed, which was celebratory inaugurated on July 31st 1932.

First Foundation Meeting

The first foundation meeting of the FC Vaduz was held in December 1931 in the Vaduzerhof. Unfortunately it is not possible to find the founding protocol of the FC Vaduz of that meeting to this day, so that the actual date of the club’s establishment can not be specified. The first verifiable document that proves the founding of the club is dated on February 14th 1932, which became the official date for the foundation of the FC Vaduz. The first President of the club was Johann Walser. And on April 24th 1932 the first team of the FC Vaduz played its first training game in Balzers, which was won 2:1. Since then, many things have changed…

First Championship

1932 the FC Vaduz played their first championship within the Vorarlberger Football Association in Austria. However, one year later in 1933, one decided to join the Swiss Football Association. In 1956, the FC Vaduz got promoted into the second league for the first time. The years 1960, 1978 and 1993 each brought the first team a promotion to the first league. And on June 9th 2001, after three consecutive inruns, the FC Vaduz finally played themselves into the National-League B, which today is the Challenge League. 70 years after the club’s foundation, the FC Vaduz, as the first Football Club from Liechtenstein, counts for the first time to the Swiss National-League.

International Appearances

Also within the international soccer the FC Vaduz was a pioneer in Liechtenstein. With 39 Liechtenstein-Cup victories of 65 matches, the FC Vaduz even holds a Europe-wide record. In the Season 1992/93 the FC Vaduz had its international premier in the Cup-Champion-Cup (now UEFA Cup) against the Ukrainian Cup-Champion Tschernomoretz FC Odessa. With the growing international involvement of the National team and soccer clubs from Liechtenstein an international infrastructure and enhanced requirements became necessary. Therefore the new Rheinpark Stadium with its official international designations was opened on July 31st 1998. In the meantime the FC Vaduz qualified itself several times on international ground. The first-time thrust into the main round (1998), in which the FC Vaduz eventually failed against the defending champion Paris St. Germain in the first round, was the biggest highlight in the club’s history up to now. And on August 12th 1999, the FC Vaduz was involved in the UEFA Cup for the first time: only little was missing for the club’s once again qualification into the main round against the Norwegian Club Bodø Glimt.
